India: Etisalat vice chairman arrested over telecoms scandal
Date: 9 Feb 2011
The vice chairman of Etisalat DB, Andimuthu Raja, has been arrested by federal investigators for alleged involvement in a 2008 scandal that saw some telecoms companies benefit from government corruption.
When the government sold cellular operating licences, some licences were awards to companies that were not eligible to take part, which then sold these on at a considerably higher price.
Balwa is accused of having sold a 45 per cent share in a licence to Etisalat at over twice the original price.
Raja has denied any wrongdoing.
