Retailer Waitrose has said it is putting its plans to expand its partnership with Shell on hold, following attacks against the company by environmental campaigners. The company, which goes to great lengths to ensure good practices in its supply chain for food, was planning on opening more shops at Shell petrol stations.

Greenpeace had been conducting an energetic campaign against the move, accusing the company of hypocrisy and encouraging supporters to flood social media outlets - such as the Waitrose Facebook page - with criticisms. It has claimed the move as a victory for the campaign.

As well as putting the move on hold, Waitrose has also announced its support for the creation of an Arctic sanctuary, which would prevent oil firms from being able to exploit oil there.
