US: Pepsi drops aspartame from Diet Pepsi

Date: 29 Apr 2015

Diet Pepsi

PepsiCo has announced that it is to end the use of artificial sweetener aspartame in its diet drinks in the second half of this year. The move only affects US markets for now, and the company says it is responding to consumer preferences there.

Aspartame has been controversial since it first appeared in the 1980s, with claims of a link between consumption of the ingredient and tumours, although the claims have been hotly disputed. Regulators who say that the evidence is that the chemical is safe do, nevertheless, agree that there should be a limit to the quantity that people take in.
