US: Netflix offers unlimited maternity and paternity leave

Netflix has introduced an unlimited leave policy for new parents that allows them to take off as much time as they want during the first year after the birth, or adoption, of a child.

The company announced the initiative, saying that the move was part of its attempt to build a 'freedom and responsibility' culture that "gives our employees context about our business and the freedom to make their own decisions along with the accompanying responsibility."

Employees will be able to return part-time, full-time or return and then go back out as they wish, and will continue to receive normal pay during that period. They will work with their managers to work out coverage during their absences.

Netflix says that its approach to its employees is part of its desire to compete for the most talented workforce. In its statement, it added: "Experience shows people perform better at work when they're not worrying about home. This new policy, combined with our unlimited time off, allows employees to be supported during the changes in their lives and return to work more focused and dedicated."
